Our Trustees
Working as a psychotherapist, executive coach, translator, educator and editor constantly nurtures my optimism in our human capacity for transformation and growth.
As Co-Chair at AHP I hope we can begin to create a space for the tribes of humanistic psychology to come together and re-vision the humanistic endeavour, perhaps even connecting with various emerging movements towards a possible global civilisation.
Naive though this may be, I like to imagine us collaborating, honouring our diversity and complexity, and getting more involved on a political and cultural level to encourage our individual and collective human potential in creative ways. There are wonderful examples of people everywhere – especially young people – doing precisely this – let’s do more joining up!
John Rowan Ph.D
John joined the AHP in 1970, and became Chair for the first time in 1972. When Self & Society began in 1973, he became one of the most frequent contributors. In 1976 was published the first edition of Ordinary Ecstasy, his general account of humanistic psychology, which reached its third edition in 2001. He has been a member of the UK Association of Humanistic Psychology Practitioners since its founding in 1980, and a member of the AHP in the United States since 1981. His Guide to Humanistic Psychology was first published in 1987, and the third edition came out in 2005. He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Humanistic Psychology. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, and of the United Kingdon Council for Psychotherapy. Tracy Jarvis
I can remember being a toddler and always believing in something beyond myself and being curious as to who I am, what that means and how can fulfil my potential. In my twenties I decided to follow this curiosity and passion and started studying as a Psychotherapist. Now I’ve just finished my final year and have a part time practise. I am the Founder and Director of Psychotherapy Excellence, a not-for-profit specialising in CPD resources and administration services for Psychotherapists, Psychotherapeutic Counsellors and trainees. Our aim is to better standards through CPD.
With a background in marketing I joined the AHP Board in 2010 and am on the Service Development Committee with UKCP www.psychotherapyexcellence.com
Sue Rowan
If I had to pick one incident that, for me, encompasses all that is wonderful about humanistic psychology, it would be one of the occasions I was facilitating a week-long workshop for the University of London extra-mural department. Cautious, formally-dressed, ready-to- take notes participants arrived. One week later, excited, open, curious, brave human beings left, wanting to continue the journey that they had started that week. For me, witnessing the transformation that comes when we are given the opportunity to glimpse our potential, to open ourselves to new ways of learning, relating and being, without fear, is magical.
I first joined the AHP Committee in 1986 and am three-times past Chair. I work in private practice as a Life, Business and Career Coach. www.suerowan.org
